Embracing the Outdoors: Exploring the Nakdong River Trail Near Camp Carroll in Waegwan

River scene with cloudy sky, distant mountains, and green landscape. A few people walk on a riverside path. Bridge and road in foreground.

If you are new to Camp Carroll or Area IV, I hope to inspire you to lace up your sneakers and hit the trails to experience the beauty and history of Waegwan. This small and quiet city is a great destination for walking, running, hiking, and biking. The Nakdong River Trail near Camp Carroll has quickly become one of my favorite places to slow down, soak in the views, and reconnect with nature.

Cloudy sky over a green hill landscape with a calm river in the foreground. Trees frame the scene, creating a tranquil mood.

I chose to run along the Nakdong River one Saturday morning and embarked on a 5-mile journey on a trail that runs parallel along it. I wanted to run outdoors not only for exercise but to connect with nature and gain mental clarity. The trail was well-maintained and filled with friendly people walking their dogs and biking.  My senses were tickled as I ran through flower gardens and watched the breathtaking view of the mountains during my journey.

The Nakdong River is one of the longest rivers in South Korea and while I only ran 5 miles, I could easily continue my route and encounter several scenic viewpoints and cultural landmarks.

Summers in Korea are hot, so I thought it was best to run at 0700 while it is still cool. If you are looking for some activities in the area, a run along the Nakdong River can easily become a cultural exploration and is easily accessible from Camp Carroll. During the summer months, consider sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing to protect yourself from the sun. Also, some bug spray for mosquitoes.
