My lifelong love affair with the ocean truly began during a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. One unforgettable day at the beach, my fellowship group and I discovered the magic of snorkeling. The water was so incredibly clear, it felt like you could see for miles into the shimmering depths. As I floated, mesmerized by the vibrant underwater world, a new dream solidified: to explore the ocean’s hidden wonders through scuba diving.

For years, I dreamt of that first breath underwater, finally making it a reality in 2022. As a complete novice, I worried about the prerequisites, especially whether I needed a certification.

To my delight, I learned that scuba diving for beginners doesn’t always require a full certification, especially for introductory dives! However, it's crucial to prioritize safety and ensure you don't have any underlying lung or ear conditions. This newfound knowledge filled me with excitement. Then, I booked my first dive as a cruise excursion scuba diving adventure while stopping in Mexico.

Learning the Basics: What to Expect on Your First Dive

Equipment, Safety, and Breathing Underwater

Upon arrival, the dive shop guided me through a beginner's video and a short quiz. They patiently explained the equipment, showing me how to use the regulator and air gauge. Before we even entered the water, they ensured I was comfortable with essential skills as part of an introductory scuba diving course, like clearing my mask and using emergency air.

Equalizing Pressure and Staying Calm

Descending into the ocean, I learned to equalize the pressure in my ears, just like on a plane or driving through mountains. My first dive was exhilarating, but it was just a taste of what was to come.

I marveled at a giant crab, schools of vibrant fish, and the pristine natural coral seafloor.

This wasn’t just another dive—it felt like experiencing the ocean again, just like my first time scuba diving. My Hawaii scuba diving experience was nothing short of magical. Hawaii has quickly become one of my picks for the best scuba diving destinations in the world.

Then, the most incredible sight: sea turtles gracefully swimming towards us! They were so serene and beautiful, casually passing by as if to say “Hello.” I was so moved, I nearly teared up.

The unforgettable moment of swimming with sea turtles will stay with me forever.

With a graceful wave of its arms, the octopus slipped back into the blue—leaving behind a memory as fluid and unforgettable as the sea itself.

The Octopus Encounter I’ll Never Forget

A Surprising and Emotional Moment with Nature

The highlight of the dive, however, was an encounter I never imagined: holding an octopus! This magnificent creature, a rich red hue, felt incredibly smooth and slippery on top, while its suction cups gently cradled my arm. We observed each other for a quiet moment before it gracefully swam back to its ocean home.

It was one of those rare and emotional scuba diving wildlife encounters you never expect. Thanks to Greg at Big Kahuna Water Sports in Honolulu, Hawaii, this extraordinary memory is one I will cherish forever.
