Navigating Homeschooling as a Military Family

If you’re searching for the right military homeschool curriculum, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions I get from military homeschool families, especially those stationed overseas, is “How do I even begin to choose a curriculum?”

Why Choosing a Homeschool Curriculum Is Especially Hard for Military Families

And I get it—finding the right homeschool curriculum for military families isn’t always straightforward. Between PCS moves, deployments, TDYs, ever-changing schedules, and your child’s individual learning style, our homeschooling needs don’t always look like everyone else’s. Some families need something highly structured to help anchor their days, while others rely on flexible programs to accommodate unpredictable duty rosters and travel. Some want secular options, others prefer faith-based materials. Many of us are also juggling accommodations for special needs or gifted learners. That’s why having PCS-friendly homeschool curriculum options that work whether you’re at a new duty station or mid-move can be a total game-changer.

I can say with confidence—it’s not always easy. But building community and finding the right tools can make a world of difference in your military homeschooling journey.

One Tool That Helps You Find the Right Fit Fast

That’s why I love sharing resources that make this process easier. One of my go-to recommendations is the Find My Curriculum Quiz from Homeschool.com.

What to Look for in a Military Homeschool Curriculum

It’s a quick, free tool that asks a few thoughtful questions and then suggests curriculum options tailored to your family’s unique situation. Whether you're looking for faith-based or secular homeschool materials, something flexible or structured, or support for gifted or special needs students, this quiz helps narrow it down quickly. You can customize your results by:

  • Your child’s grade level

  • Specific subjects or full core curriculum

  • Format preference - textbook, online, blended learning, etc.

  • Homeschooling style - Classical, Charlotte Mason, Waldorf, Unit Studies, Student-Led, or no preference

  • Whether your child has special needs or is gifted

  • Secular or faith-based programs

  • Structured or flexible schedules

  • Free resources or paid programs

Why This Matters for Military Families

Military life is full of unique challenges, frequent PCS moves, unpredictable schedules, varying access to resources, and living overseas under SOFA status. Choosing the right homeschool curriculum means finding one that’s flexible, portable, and aligned with your values and goals. Because what works for you at one duty station might not work at the next. Space limitations, access to resources, local co-op options, and shipping availability can all change when you PCS. As children grow, so do their interests and abilities. Having a tool that helps you narrow down options based on your current reality makes those transitions so much smoother.

What I Wish I Had Known Before We Started Homeschooling Overseas

When we first started homeschooling overseas, I felt overwhelmed by all the curriculum choices out there. We wanted a curriculum that could be used through middle school and high school, but also allow our child to take advanced high school-level classes as a middle schooler. And since we were stationed overseas, we also needed a homeschool program that worked for military kids abroad, something we could stick with no matter where we were sent next.

We needed something that was comprehensive, but also structured similarly in each class to provide predictability to increase his academic independence. We also wanted something that made it possible for the student and parent to see all the learning objectives, assignments, completed assignments, and his current grade. And like any military family, it had to fit the budget we had. A tool like this would have saved me hours of research and second-guessing.
